Having a devotion isn’t just a habit of reading the Bible and praying, but a time to examine the Bible thoroughly with the mindset of digging deeper as you meditate and explore His Word to understand just who God is, what His heart and mind are like, and what His will is for your life, so that you can obey Him and receive His blessings as is written,
“If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you…. If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love.” (John 15:7,10)
We offer five steps to carry out a daily devotion focusing on God’s Word.
Step 1: Pray
Step 2: Read
Step 3: Observe and Explore the passage
+ Observe the context
+ Divide the passage into smaller sections
+ Ask basic questions
+ Write down what you learn from answering those questions
Step 4: Answer two important questions
+ How is God (and/or Jesus and the Holy Spirit) portrayed through this passage?
+ What lesson has God shown me?
Step 5: Respond in prayer
Note: You should record a summary of the passage, what God revealed to you about Himself and His will for your life, and what you learned/how God spoke to you through the passage.
This won’t just assist you in asking God to help you follow His will, but also assist you count His blessings and see how they’ve increased each day as you faithfully meet with Him every day.
