The Pharisees aren’t just historical characters; they had some attitudes we too can all fall into if we’re not careful. Let’s look at how we can evaluate whether we have any pharisee tendencies:
- Judging Others
The Pharisees were always pointing out other people’s mistakes. Instead of focusing on the good, they criticized and judged. Jesus taught, “Judge not, that you be not judged” (Matthew 7:1). If we only see the bad in others and make fun of them or condemn them, we’re acting just like the Pharisees. Thinking We’re Always Right
Remember the Pharisee who prayed in the temple, thanking God that he was good and not like the tax collector. He thought he was better than others. The Bible reminds us, “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). Sometimes, we might think we’re not as bad as others, but that doesn’t mean we’re perfect. It’s important to remember that we all make mistakes.Being Proud
The Pharisees were upset when Jesus taught with authority because they thought they were the only ones who could teach. Jesus said, “Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.” (Matthew 23:12). Sometimes we can be too proud, thinking we know everything. This can stop us from listening, learning, and being kind and humble. All Talk, No Action
The Pharisees were great at talking but not doing. The Bible says, “be doers of the word, and not hearers only” (James 1:22). It’s important that our actions match our words. We shouldn’t just say we’ll do good things, we should actually do them!Lacking Mercy
Jesus shared a story as an example of how the Pharisees often didn’t help those in need, while Jesus’ teachings were always about showing compassion, saying, “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy” (Matthew 5:7). Even in a world where not everyone is honest, we should still be wise and willing to help others.
