There was a great revival that began around 1727 in a community of Moravians called “Herrnhut”. The Lord’s watchful care – in Germany. They later spread to England and America. The Moravians began a community committed to following Christ’s teachings about simplicity, holiness, and truth. Not long after, many Christians from different denominations joined Herrnhut. From there, this community developed into a small town.
But in the early 1720s, religious disagreements arose among this community, and they became deeply divided and often criticized each other. Zinzendorf, the leader of the Moravian Church, was horrified at the ungodliness of those who called themselves Christians. He humbled himself and prayed to God, asking for unity, love, and repentance among the community. He visited all the members of the community and set up a covenant to call them to understand each other and focus on the things they agreed on instead of continuing to set their eyes on the differences. The community united in agreement to sign a covenant, committing to follow their Savior, Jesus, and to forever bury their disputes. Many of them decided to set aside certain times to continue zealously seeking God in prayer.
On July 16th, Zinzendorf came before God in weeping and tears, pouring out his spirit before God during a time of community prayer. His prayer set about a supernatural revival. The entire community of believers started praying as never before. In those days, they were deeply affected by the word of God and the power in the blood of Christ.
After that, an incredibly unique and significant revival began among the children in Herrnhut and Berthelsdorf. On August 18th, all of the children in the boarding school were convicted by God through the powerful moving of the Spirit; they spent the whole night in prayer. From that night on, God continued to move mightily in the hearts and minds of the children. There are no words to describe the miraculously powerful work of the Holy Spirit over them; their lives were transformed.
On August 25th, the Moravians started a 24-hour ministry of prayer every day that lasted for more than one hundred years. They believed that, as the flame on the altar in the old temple never stopped burning, so in the Church, which is now the temple of God, the prayers of the saints need to continuously reverberate out, lifted up to God. And from that small community, many missionaries were sent out. The Moravians have planted the seeds of the Gospel all over the globe.
Are you spending time to talk to God every day? You can pray and ask Him to help you do just that!
