Marriage in the Christian perspective is not a human invention but originated from God. He is the One who established this institution. Thus, according to the Bible, only God has the authority to define what constitutes a true marriage. The Bible states that marriage as instituted by God is between a man and a woman, as illustrated in Genesis 2:24; Matthew 19:8; Mark 10:6.
While the Bible documents instances of polygamy, these accounts do not imply its endorsement. In fact, many of these stories highlight the difficulties and conflicts that arose from such arrangements, reaffirming God’s original design for monogamy. For example, in Abraham’s family, Hagar despised Sarah, leading to a complex and bitter relationship that eventually resulted in Hagar and Ishmael being sent away (Genesis 16:4-6; 21:8-10).
Jacob’s family faced constant strife, with Leah and Rachel often jealous of each other. This tension extended to their sons, with Rachel’s son Joseph being hated by Leah’s sons, who ultimately sold him into slavery because of jealousy and their father’s favoritism (Genesis 37). Solomon’s situation further illustrates the complications of polygamy, as his 700 wives and 300 concubines led him into idolatry, leading his heart astray from a faithful worship of God (1 Kings 11:1-8).
God clearly set out the principles for marriage, stating: “That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh” (Genesis 2:23-24). “Wives, submit yourselves to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord. Husbands, love your wives…” (Colossians 3:18-19); “…Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate” (Matthew 19:6); “Do not deprive each other…” (1 Corinthians 7:5a); “Marriage should be honored by all, and the marriage bed kept pure…” (Hebrews 13:4).
For Christians, marriage is not merely a loving partnership but also symbolizes the relationship between Jesus Christ and His Bride – the Church (Ephesians 5:25-33). Therefore, a beautiful, proper, and joyful marriage is seen as a living testament to the Good News, serving as a beacon of God’s love, grace, and faithfulness to the world.
