01: Meaning of the word: Joy or rejoicing describes a state of great gladness and inner happiness in one’s soul, often expressed outwardly through a smile, dancing, singing, or laughter. For Christians, true joy doesn’t come from outside circumstances but is a joy that comes from inside your heart, inseparable from God Himself: “Rejoice in the Lord”!
02: Some portrayals of joy and rejoicing in the Bible:
• God is the full and complete source of joy for Christians (Psalm 16:11).
• Rejoicing in the midst of adversity and great sadness (Habakkuk 3:17-19; Romans 5:3).
• A property of joy is that it shines for others to see (Philippians 4:4; 1 Thessalonians 5:16).
• A spirit of joy is often present when Christians meet together (Esther 8:16; Psalm 122:1).
• The call to “rejoice” is present throughout the Bible (Joel 2:21; Philippians 2:18; Revelation 19:7).
03: Some notable Bible passages: Philippians 1-4; Esther 8:15-17; Habakkuk 3:17-19.
04: A verse to remember:
“You make known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand” (Psalm 16:11).
05: Application of joy in the lives of Christians:
“Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!” (Philippians 4:4). No matter what our circumstances in life are, Christians are still urged to live joyfully. Joyful because God is with us (Psalm 107:30); joyful because we know that we still have hope (Revelation 21:4); joyful because we experience the great works God is doing (Psalm 126:3).
“With joy, press on, for God’s presence leads you onward.”
