The world we live in is not a perfect place. Natural disasters occur everywhere. Let’s learn about some notable examples of these phenomena.
EARTHQUAKES
Earthquakes are caused by movements of tectonic plates in the Earth’s crust, leading to fractures and sometimes resulting in volcanic eruptions.
VOLCANOES
Volcanoes occur when the pressure of magma beneath the Earth’s surface is greater than the pressure of the ground above. The magma then erupts, forming a volcano.
FLOODING
Floods occur when high tides or storms cause large amounts of water, along with dirt and rocks, to overflow riverbanks and break through structures like levees and dams which are designed to prevent water from flowing downhill into valleys. Flooding can also occur when seawater rises and inundates coastal areas.
TSUNAMI
Tsunamis are caused by earthquakes, other large geological movements beneath or above the water’s surface, volcanic eruptions, or meteor strikes.
SNOWSTORMS
Snowstorms are characterized by strong winds of at least 56 km/h (35 mph) and often last three or more hours.
HAIL
Hail occurs when small or large chunks of ice, called hailstones, fall from the sky. These are formed by strong convection currents in cumulonimbus clouds. Hailstones generally range in size from 5 mm (0.20 in) to 44-45 mm (1.75 in) and have irregular shapes.
In addition to these, many other natural disasters occur, such as droughts, heat waves, tornadoes, forest fires, epidemics, and impacts from space objects. The world is full of unpredictable events, reminding us that this is not our permanent home. Our perfect home will be a new heaven and new earth, prepared by God for those who believe in Him. In our true home, there will be no more frightening disasters or calamities.
