A 17th century husband and wife living in England named Samuel and Susanna Wesley gave the world an impressive legacy: 10 devout children. Among those were John Wesley and Charles Wesley, two pastors who started the Methodist Movement. Christians throughout history have held the way this husband and wife invested in and instructed their children in high esteem.

When Pastor Samuel decided to serve God and step into this shepherding position that offered just a small pension, his family’s life became very difficult, and they struggled a lot. Of course, the financial stresses they faced with every day didn’t make him lax in his job or his responsibility of raising his many children.
During the times that Pastor Samuel was away from home due to his ministry, Susanna spent all of her time taking care of her children and teaching them. Susanna taught their children six days a week, six hours a day. She taught them about literature, poetry, hymns, music, math, science, Latin, Greek, and theology.

At that time, women didn’t study much. Despite this, Susanna started teaching her children very early on. In fact, she taught them so well that by the time they were 8 years old they could read the Bible fluently in Greek.
Every week Susanna Wesley set aside one hour to meet separately with each of her children to talk to them and direct them in their spiritual lives. Aside from that, she would spend one hour every day with God, as well as pray for each of their children. Their children were raised meticulously regarding their spiritual lives and in their understanding of God’s Word through their father’s lessons and the faithful determination of their mother.
It could be said that Samuel and Susanna Wesley gave their all with the purpose of leaving behind a spiritual legacy for their children. They couldn’t have known that their children would then become such a legacy of faith for the world.
