Hello teachers and parents!
After seeing the results of the first Sunday School curriculum we produced back in 2019, SU Vietnam dared to put together this Sunday School curriculum with the topic, “NAMES OF GOD”. The curriculum is aimed at children 7-14 and the length of study is 1 year. There are at least 3 things that our compilation team wants you to consider when choosing this topic:
First, as we know, a person’s name is very important to them. In Vietnam, we put a lot of importance on choosing names, whether that choice is based on fear or hope. A name is not simply a “name tag” to wear around as a way to differentiate one person from another, it is the hopes and expectations of the one who gave them that name towards their future, influence in life, morals, character and achievements.
It is the same with God. Names in the Bible are very meaningful, especially the names that He gives to others. Those names reflect the character, accomplishments, faith, , and future of the ones who receive it.
God changed Abram’s name, which means “exalted father”, to Abraham – “father of multitudes” – which carried the promise of descendents even in his old age. Sarai’s name God changed to Sarah, which means “princess” – suggesting the idea of a queen of many princesses. And we can see that a Name of God Himself is even more significant and meaningful than these names.
Secondly, the Names God chooses for Himself demonstrate for His people the way He expresses His love towards us. Because of that, those who have experienced that love call God by His Names as a powerful declaration – Jehovah Shalom – the One who guarantees peace, Jehovah Nissi – the victorious One who loves us profoundly, and many other Names. Maybe some of us have also personally experienced these Names of God. Now is the time we need to bring out all of these truths we’ve experienced and pass them on to our children.
Finally, we hardly ever hear the Names of God taught or preached in the order that the Bible has them written down, but if we really do some research, we will see the amazing way that God reveals Himself. The Bible begins with the Name Elohim – The Creator. Not long after that, when God provides the ram to take the place of Isaac, the Bible records the name Jehovah Jireh. We then see YAHWEH (Jehovah), Rapha, Nissi, Shalom, Raah, Tsidkenu, Shammah, and finally Alpha and Omega – The beginning and the end. The image of our lives starting in Genesis with God Elohim and and ending by returning to the arms of the Alpha and Omega found in Revelation shows us that wherever we are on our journey of life, whether the journey is long or short, we have with us the assurance that the God who all these Names describe is with us always. This is a wondrous and majestic picture.
