There are two important days in someone’s life. “The two most important days in your life are the day you are born and the day you find out why.” The fact that everyone here was born is a gift, and it is a miraculous thing that we were all able to enter into this world. Because of that, the celebration of birthdays is a big part of the culture of celebration for most people we know. But what were we born for? People come to an understanding of their true value when they realize the reason that they were born. For many of us, that’s the day we were born again, the day that God put our old self to death and placed on us a new name: NEW CREATION. Jesus said: “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit.” (John 12:24). Jesus compares us to those grains of wheat; we must fall down, be buried, and die. Then we will have a new life, put down roots, grow strong, and produce much fruit. Jesus said these words before He stepped onto the cross in order to fall down to the earth, be buried, die, and come back to life. He always taught those who followed Him that they must die. They must die in order for their life to begin. The new life of those who follow Jesus starts with His death on the cross. If Jesus didn’t die, then those who follow Him would not be able to experience life.
In fact, moving from the death of the old person and stepping into the new person is like turning on a lightswitch. The Holy Spirit is the One who flips that switch. He is the One who activates that life within us, allowing us to have the ability to listen to God’s voice and believe in Him. And when that lightswitch gets turned on, the darkness will be pushed back. That doesn’t happen because of the strength of the lightbulb itself, but because of the person who turned it on. In the same way, when our new life is activated, our old self, our old identity, our old nature – dies.
